I’ve been sick off and on for almost a week and it’s been frustrating. I feel like I’m missing out on time with my team and ministry. I want to be able to do everything and put my all into it. Why am I in Indonesia if I’m just going to be sick?

As I was resting today, I was reminded that God’s presence, purpose, and blessings don’t always come in the package we picture in our heads.

And today My Lord has been sending me little gifts 🙂

I was sipping on store bought coconut water to help restore my electrolytes. I woke up from my nap to my host, who had brought me a whole coconut. She showed me how to cut into it, popped the straw in, and I had fresh coconut water. I’m not a big fan of eating coconut, but it was delicious and refreshing.

I laid in bed staring outside and noticed that it had started raining. If you know me, you know how much I love the rain. I believe God uses weather as a way to talk to us. I stepped outside, put me hands out, and felt His love pour down.

In that moment, I saw the small blessings He was giving me, despite feeling down about being sick. And that’s what inspired me to write my first poem since I’ve been out of the country.

Rain in Bandung

I glance down at my feet, walking

down streets once so unfamiliar

There’s no rhythm to the traffic

Yet it flows, without pause

the locals overflow with kindness

And welcome us with grace

The barrier between us isn’t a brick wall

Just a little fence

Through it we see one another’s faces

We smile

Because that’s all we know how to say

I’ve been dropped into another world

Discomfort would be an easy description

But that’s not the one I choose

Because as I step into the falling rain

Somehow

I feel at home
